Black Lives Matter At Summer Camp & Camp Chi
Summer camp is built on the idea of giving young people fuller lives through recreation, enrichment, and community. Camp centers on the well-being of youth and was created to better their life outcomes, experiences, and personal growth. In recent months, Chi has shared many articles and resources in how to live a life inspired by our values of community, kindness, and respect for all.
After nearly 100 years of providing life changing moments to our community, we continue to try to do more. While we know our priority is for all our campers, staff, and families, we also focus on the members of our broader community. We extend our hearts, our values, and the power of the experience we create to those who have been left behind. We began this with a commitment to the inclusion of all people regardless of any identification factors or labels. We have written blogs and shared many resources on how to support Black owned business, engage campers in actions and how to educate ourselves. We will continue to share Chi Does Good and explore ways our values permeate our lives and how to act.
With that lens, we are working to create programming for our community to help them learn about race, racism, diversity, and equality through a Jewish lens and in the Jewish community. Given that 1 million out of the 7.2 million Jews in the United States identify as people of color, we are thrilled to provide you with free opportunities to lean in and engage in authentic and meaningful conversation designed to move the needle on how we all engage in the world with sensitivity and compassion. The Amplifying Voices Series, brought to us in partnership with the Tucson JCC, is a culmination of unique events to help our community reflect on the concepts of race, religion and identity. You can register for one, all or some of the events and learn more by visiting our website. Sessions are geared for participants 14 years and older.
This is just one more step in helping raise awareness as to why Black Lives Matter at Camp. We know we have not been perfect, and we at Camp Chi will always strive to do more and do better. In conjunction with over 400 camps around the Country, we join the ACA (American Camp Association) to share this statement and support. We affirm that Black Lives Matter. We promise to continue to do our best to learn how to and be a part of the work to eliminate structural racism in all of the spaces in our camp and home lives. #BLMatCamp
