September News from the Chi Family
Can you believe we have not posted any Chi Family News since June? So much has happened and we are excited to fill you in on all the great things happening within the Camp Chi Family. Without further ado, let’s see what is happening…
Back in May, Jack Zislis won the highest award at Sherwood Elementary, the 5th Grade Leadership Award! Clearly Jack keeps those Chi values showing all year. Way to go!
Also in May, Molly Brenner graduated from University of Missouri-Columbia. We know Molly will go on to do great things!
Koby Preston was named one of four of Deerfield High School’s National Merit Semifinalist. Finalists will be announced in the spring. You can read more about how Kobi was able to qualify here.
Drivers be warned, the next group of campers are getting their driving permits. So far Grant Katzenstein and Rory Nutkevitch have their permits. Drive safely everyone!
Bradley University is a new Chi Hub, with many staff and alum very active down in Peoria. Reece Weber recently became the President of the Chabad Board, while Viktor Cin, Andrew Banda-Frey and Noah Dockman joined AEPI at Bradley. Speaking of AEPI, James Franks is the Social Media Chairman of the Bradley AEPI. We know we’ll be following Bradley University AEPi to see all of James’ hard work.
Tali “Terf” Erf has been pretty busy! She is one of the founding mothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi at University of Cincinnati! It is a newer Jewish sorority opening up chapters around the US and last fall, Terf helped bring it to life on campus in Cincinnati, and then served as the community service chair for two semesters. Now Terf is studying abroad in Australia this semester. She is studying industrial design at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne will be down under until December, with some other travels to New Zealand and Tasmania, before returning stateside.
Love must have been in the air this summer. Mazel tov to Rachel Hirsh, Zack Perlman, Sarah Kogan and Jamie Lampert on their engagements.
While they were getting engaged, many in the Chi family chose this summer to tie the knot. We wish a lifetime of love and happiness to Jackie Gelman, Ricky Brandt, Alyssa Poteshman, Jessica Horowitz, Adam Mesirow, Stacy Pincus and Robyn Offenbach (featured in the photo above) on their recent weddings!
The athletics program at Chi must be doing something right. The Latin School of Chicago Girls Softball Team won the Regional Championships this spring for the second time in three years with our own Katie Kramer as the winning pitcher. Katie was also selected as an all-conference athlete for 2017 and was selected by her peers to serve as captain of the 2017-18 varsity team. The Stevenson Freshman Soccer Team gained a Chi camper when Blake Finkel made the team this fall.
A hearty mazel tov to each of our recent b’nai mitzvot. Gabriel Spitz and Sammy Kleinman celebrated their bar mitzvot on August 20, with Mick and Miles Racenstein celebrating on September 9, followed by Julia Goldstein on September 9.
The SIT class of 2033 is growing! Carrie Ross and her husband, Ricky, welcomed Lainey Brielle Ross in June. There’s a new set of Berkley Boys as Jon Berkley and wife, Erin, welcomed twins – Theodore Samuel and Ari William. Melissa Oziel-Attuil now has 3 girls, as she welcomed Eve Jasmine. Lauren Beslow welcomed Danielle Hailey on August 18. Megan Kaufman Howard had a baby boy, Charlie Justen. Last, but certainly not least, Debbie Kimberly-Serota and wife, Beth, had a baby boy, Rafael Solomon.
Somebody call the doctor! Alex Simon is headed to Loyal Medical School this fall.
Set your DVR! Ben Walanka, previous Season 5 competitor on Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, will return as one of the 16 All-Stars in Season 17. Premiere will be on Friday, September 29th on Fox.
And, at the Emmy Awards, we had another Chi Reunion! Jon Mussman and Barb Spilberg Held ran into each other at the Emmy Award Governor’s Ball. Check out their snazzy pic on Chi’s Instagram.
