Jonno’s Trip to Israel April 2024

I recently had the privilege of traveling to Israel a few weeks ago, and it was an emotional rollercoaster. On one hand, the weight of October 7th and the ongoing war was palpable everywhere. Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel with drones and missiles from its own soil. Visiting the Nova music festival site, I couldn’t escape the posters reminding me of the citizens still held in Gaza. It’s safe to say it was an intense experience.

On the other hand, I had the joy of meeting my 5-month-old nephew (I’m an uncle!) and spending time with my sister and brother-in-law, whom I hadn’t seen in over a year. I reunited with cousins, explored Tel Aviv, and savored delicious shawarma, shakshuka, and other classic dishes.

During conversations, many asked me, “Why are you here?” Given the current circumstances, it was a valid question.

So why was I there? Camp!

I attended the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) training of Israeli summer camp staff. It was a significant event, with hundreds of young Israelis coming from all corners of the country, some even receiving permission from their army or reserve duties to participate. Camp professionals from across North America also joined to connect with their staff and assist in their summer preparations.

Being part of it was truly inspiring, especially considering the uncertainty leading up to the event. The energy and enthusiasm of the young Israelis were infectious. They were eager to create new experiences, forge friendships, step out of their comfort zones, and positively impact young American Jews.

In just a month, these participants will disperse across North America, sharing stories around campfires, teaching kids to water ski, crafting friendship bracelets, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

It takes immense courage for these young adults to leave their familiar surroundings every summer, especially amidst current challenges. Now more than ever, it’s crucial for American Jews to connect with Israeli Jews, and for Israelis to escape the heaviness of the moment and experience the magic of summer camp.

I eagerly anticipate seeing our Israeli staff in action this summer at the Cove, the Israeli Village, the Outdoor Kitchens, and all-around Camp Chi. Here’s to a beautiful Summer 2024! It wouldn’t be the same without our Israeli staff.
