Construction & Renovation: A Chain Reaction

Camp Chi’s Centennial campaign hallmark construction project of the brand-new Atkins Family Health Center provided an incredible chance to expand the campus and accommodate more program space. With construction of a new Health Center building in a different location, the old health center structure remained. That opening provided some generous Camp Chi families the opportunity to contribute to the Chi Centennial campaign and build out some creative program options at camp!
The old health center will be transformed into the Hochwert Family Media Arts Center. The expansive, newly remodeled space will serve as a central hub for our vast media arts programs including radio, DJ, Rockstars, film and more. These specialties were once housed in various locations throughout camp, so combining them into one building will allow for more collaboration, better brainstorming, cross training of staff, and the ability to further expand into new areas related to the media arts.
The relocation of the radio specialty gives us the chance to rethink how its former space can be used. The radio specialty used to be housed adjacent to the outdoor cooking specialty, which is one of the most popular activities at camp. Because cooking is so popular, we reimagined the former-radio studios into an expanded space for additional culinary offerings, something we have been wanting to do for quite some time. Thanks to the generosity of the Pinsky Family, the building adjacent to Outdoor Cooking specialty will be remodeled into the Pinsky Family Culinary Arts Center. We look forward to expanding our culinary options from campfire cooking to include more traditional indoor cooking and baking.
In addition to the expansion of indoor culinary arts space, we look forward to renovating Outdoor Cooking with thanks to the Cooper Family, who have supported the enhancement of the programming and facilities, through a generous gift to the Chi Centennial campaign. The enhancement of this area will allow us to strengthen and grow our Outdoor Cooking specialty and meet the growing demand for this activity for the entire Camp Chi family!
We have begun construction on many of the repairs and upgrades on these newly developed spaces and will use these areas for Summer 2021 in limited capacities.
We are incredibly grateful to the Hochwert, Pinsky and Cooper families and all other generous contributors to the Camp Chi Centennial Capital Campaign, for these much-needed upgrades to the campus. Our campers and staff will enjoy these spaces for the 100th summer and for many summers to come!
