Mix It Up Monday #6: Israel Edition

By Camp Chi
campers saying goodbye at the end of summer
Mix It Up Monday

Here we are again- another Mix It Up Monday. It’s a special week for us though, as this week has both Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Day of Remembrance and Independence Day respectively. And while our hearts are always turning to the east, this week they’ve turned a little more and we’re theming this Mix It Up Monday to Israel. And with this theme, we’ve changed our rules to encourage one screen-based activity instead of a messy one this week. But you can always check out previous Mix It Up Mondays for more activities to keep everyone busy.

Something Artsy: Wish Israel a Happy Birthday!

Quarantine or not, Israel is turning 72 and that is something we should celebrate. So join us and make birthday card or poster for Israel’s birthday! Send us photos of your Israel Artwork to jcccampchi@gmail.com and post with the tag #ChiCelebratesIsrael! We would love to share what you create along with videos of our Camp Chi family doing the birthday dance for Israel! We have a special birthday video coming on Wednesday, so stay tuned.

Something Yummy: Hummus

Few foods are as easy to make, as delicious, and as Israeli as a good hummus. So get that food processor ready and get ready for a tasty Israeli treat.

Ingredients
1 15 oz can chickpeas/garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
2-4 Tbsp water
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp lemon juice
3/4 tsp ground cumin
1/4-1/ tsp salt
1 clove garlic, minced

Instructions
1. Add the chickpeas/garbanzo beans, 2 tablespoons of water, the olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to a food processor. Process until smooth and creamy. If needed, add additional water to thin out the hummus and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to your taste preference.
2. Store covered in the refrigerator.
3. Enjoy with pita, veggies, and much more!

Feeling adventurous? Try making this delicious pita at home!

Something Different: Celebrate Israel’s Independence Day LIVE!

Social distancing doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate together. It just means we have to do it virtually. Celebrate Yom Haatzmaut Live on Wednesday, April 29 at 1:00pm CST with fellow Jews and Israelis all over the World! There will be a live performance of One Day by Matisyahu, The Brothers Platt, and so many other fun and interesting performances and speakers!

Here is a link to the live celebration hosted by Jewish Federations of North America.

Something Active: Israeli Dance Party

Nothing gets us moving at camp more than Israeli Dancing. So why not have your very own Israeli Dance Party at home to celebrate Israel’s Birthday… Camp Chi style!

So check out some of our favorite tunes and dances:

  • Jungle by Eyal Golan
  • Zibin Zibin by Verka Serduchka
  • Toy by Netta
  • Golden Boy by Nadav Gudev
  • Tel Aviv by Omer Adam
  • Zahvav by Static & Ben El
